She was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and is the youngest of four daughters to parents from Mexico and Puerto Rico. As a young girl living in housing projects, Sandra was forced to grow up quickly to survive. This environment also made her hyper-aware of the issues facing low-income BIPOC communities and how the world is quick to dismiss and “other” them. This experience has followed Sandra throughout her life, encouraging her to continuously seek and create safe spaces while advocating for racial and social justice.

Sandra has been working since she was 16 and spent years in retail/customer service before graduating with a BA in Media Studies from Hunter College and becoming certified as a UX Designer. Since then, she’s worked for a leading real estate website and in the non-profit sector, learning to hone her design and storytelling skills and lead with fearless empathy. A fan of the side hustle and giving back to her community, Sandra has been a freelance web designer and marketing consultant for over five years, assisting local BIPOC-owned businesses and entrepreneurs with their marketing. Sandra also has a huge passion for animals. In 2017, she became certified in TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) to help her local neighborhood cats. She occasionally rescues and fosters the friendly ones she comes across.

In her free time, Sandra loves being with her family, including her two cats and dog, and her small friend circle of badass women. She also enjoys being a plant mom, eating tamales and arroz con gandules, and reading any book that Silvia Moreno-Garcia writes. Email Sandra and say helloConnect with Sandra on LinkedIn. Building Pathways: The Organizational Equity Cohort

Building Pathways: The Organizational Equity Cohort

Read Time: 2 minutes People talk about the left and right hand sides of the brain, a convenient shorthand that glosses over the complexities of the human brain and especially adult learning. Learning at work involves designing for more than just the linear/logical (left) and creative/associative (right) sides of our brains. As an organizer, I know how important it is to name, see and address power on all four levels on which it operates: individual (internalized), interpersonal, institutional and structural. Doing this allows me to really understand organizations when I am supporting them in their equity journey and learning.
