Since the Awake to Woke to Work®: Building a Race Equity Culture™ publication was released in 2018, Equity In The Center® stakeholders have asked for a tool to assess where organizations are on the Race Equity Cycle®. The Race Equity Cycle Pulse Check™ is designed to do so and provide recommendations on next steps and tools to move work toward the next phase!

Before beginning this work, it’s important to start with a clear and shared understanding of a Race Equity Culture™ and the nature of the work required to create and sustain it. A Race Equity Culture is one that is focused on proactively counteracting race inequities inside and outside of an organization. It requires an adaptive and transformational approach that impacts behaviors and mindsets as well as practices, programs, and processes.

The work of building a Race Equity Culture is focused on transforming organizational culture, practice and process to narrow (and eventually eliminate) race-based disparities in measurable outcomes (composition, compensation, promotion, retention, staff engagement, staff performance, et al.). As such, before taking the Pulse Check we strongly recommend that your team be familiar with our Awake to Woke to Work®: Building a Race Equity Culture™ publication as the Pulse Check was created to function as its companion.

We haven’t scheduled the follow-up discussion on the next steps but we will. One of the best things about this was seeing the difference in how people at different levels of the organization view our work and what we have done.

Race Equity Cycle Pulse Check™ Cohort

The Race Equity Cycle Pulse Check™ is available to members of EIC’s cohort program, which launched September 2023. The cohort is designed to provide organizational teams with coaching and capacity building support as they complete the assessment and work to develop a Race Equity Action Plan (REAP).
